Good Afternoon
Please find following a response to your email received Tuesday 3 August 2010, issued on behalf of;
The Hon Jan McLucas
Labor Senator for Queensland
Dear ObM
Thank you for your recent email requesting my response to questions you and your friends and colleagues have in the lead up to the 2010 Federal Election.
The issues you raise are not ones that can be responded to with a blanket yes or no answer. Much depends on the precise proposals. Recognizing that there is an issue is one thing, working out the appropriate, effective and practical policy response is another.
1. “Hardening up border protection laws”
The Gillard Labor Government is committed to strong border protection and an orderly migration program. We’ve made changes to toughen people smuggling laws.
2. “The Internet Filter”
We support the enhanced internet filter announced by Steven Conroy. You can read about this at http://www.dbcde.gov.au/funding_and_programs/cybersafety_plan/internet_service_provider_isp_filtering
3. “A price on carbon / ETS”
We support a market based mechanism to price carbon at the right time and under the right circumstances – including community consensus. See http://www.alp.org.au/federal-government/news/speech--julia-gillard,--moving-forward-together-on/
4. “Gay Marriage”
The ALP remains committed to maintaining the definition of marriage as currently set out in the Marriage Act. However, we have taken steps to remove discrimination and equalise treatment for gay couples in areas like superannuation, social security, taxation, Medicare, veteran’s affairs, workers’ compensation, and educational assistance.
Thank you once again for your email.
Yours sincerely
Jan McLucas
